About Glenn Livingston

Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his(or his company's)  previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, The Indiana Star Ledger, The NY Daily News, American Demographics, or any of the other major media outlets you see on this page.  You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV.

Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants.  Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food.

It’s funny because some people can be so shy about this topic and it can be a hard thing to admit that you sex drive might be in the negative, but we’ve all been there at some point.

I know I was there after I had my first son, I did not want to even think about sex or anything sexual. Of course, that was totally normal especially postpartum with your first - I mean you’re scarred after giving birth for the first time.

But as I’ve worked with clients, low libido can be common and I see it a lot more when people are on certain prescription medicines, like birth control, antidepressants, anxiety meds, etc.

But it could also just be because you’re stressed, your hormones are low, or you’re nutrient deficient. Our testosterone levels play a big part in sex drive. If we’re anemic, it can also lower our sex drive (iron plays a role too!) Certain neurotransmitters like dopamine play a role.

Today, I’m just going to be covering certain foods and herbs that can be beneficial in increasing that libido.

Of course, there are a list of foods and things that you should avoid and that could be a toll of your sex drive, but basically it’s things that I don’t recommend anyway. Processed foods, bad quality animal products, sugar, alcohol, and even caffeine can affect our sex drive.

One of the first herbs that have been studied to help with increasing libido is maca root. Maca root is a great adaptogenic herb, which helps our body respond to stress in a better way. It also helps support our hormones, which can help with our sex drive. I personally put the maca root powder in my smoothies from Gaia herbs and I love it!

Ashwaganda is another adaptogenic herb as well to help our body respond to stress. In the Biomed Research International Journal, they did a study on ashwagandha versus a placebo and the results showed that ashwaganda was beneficial to increasing sex drive. This was determined by a score that rated arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction.

Remember when I mentioned about those dopamine levels affecting your sex drive? Dark chocolate is a food that help increase those dopamine levels. BUT, this dark chocolate has to be more than 70%. The darker the chocolate, the more health benefits it has. It does have a little bit of an acquired taste though!

In the Journal of Nutrition + Aging, it explained that omega-3 fatty acids from fish help regulate mood and libido. I’m always a big supporter of taking in omega-3 in a supplement form if you aren’t eating enough wild caught fish. Omega-3, among other fatty acids, build strong cellular membranes and help with balancing our hormones, which play a role in keeping lubrication in women at a good amount. No fun having dryness down there. In addition, fish oil can also help decrease the sex hormone binding globulin, which means more FREE testosterone is realeased.

Nutmeg + clove was shown to increase libido in mice in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal.

Selenium and zinc are essential in keeping our testosterone levels at a good level. Like I mentioned in the beginning, testosterone plays a role in our libido. Some foods that are high in selenium and/or zinc would be Brazil nuts. Almonds, chicken, spinach, tuna, beef, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate, and oysters.

Of course, sleep and stress play a role in your libido too! As it does with everything. One, if you aren’t getting enough sleep, this causes hormonal disruption, especially with testosterone. Two, if you aren’t getting enough sleep, that can cause extra stress on your body. And stress alone (even if you’re getting great sleep), can suppress and disrupt our hormones, leading to low libido. Pssst, remember that our body can focus more on producing cortisol, which inhibits our testosterone production. We should be sleeping between 7-9 hours per night and reducing the amount of stress in our life (Yes, easier said than done), but possible. We have to make time for ourselves and do things we love and what we consider fun. That’s one of the best and easiest ways to start to get some more enjoyment in your life and less stress.

One thing that you’ve probably seen on the internet or talked about it with someone is food sensitivities. Now to start off with, I’m not talking about allergies, which is the IgE response to certain foods or environmental factors. But, our body responding to foods that affects us negatively, NOT a full blown allergy. The definition of a food sensitivity is an inflammation generated reaction against a specific food that does not involve IgE sensitivity.

Many food sensitivity tests test only one component of our immune system reacting to food, like just IgG or just IgA, etc. One problem with that is there are other aspects of our immune system that could be reacting to a food, not just IgG. And MOST food sensitivity tests only test IgG or IgA.  Just IgG being elevated to a certain food can actually show tolerance versus having an intolerance. It’s just showing that your body is exposed to a certain food, it doesn’t mean technically mean a sensitivity. There are many different ways the immune system can respond that doesn’t include IgG, IgA, IgM, etc.

In the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, it backs up with what I’m saying that IgG to foods does not indicate food allergy or intolerance, but a response of the immune system after being exposed to a food components.

Having a food sensitivity and it actually affecting our body, we want to look for mediator releases, which are cytokines (interleukins, TNF, Interferons), Histamine, Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes, etc. These are released from white blood cells. If these aren’t being released, then there is ultimately no negative effects to our body from a certain food. The physical symptoms (like fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, headache, etc.) all come from these mediators. Not all immune complexes and reactions end with these mediators.

Most food sensitivity tests show one small part of the immune response. It’s just if you just test ONE hormone, like one estrogen, when there are actually three major estrogens E1, E2, E3. It’s just one tiny part of a big picture. This is why I’m a big fan of the DUTCH test for hormones and adrenals.  The food sensitivity test that I recommend is the MRT. Because it shows these mediator end points of how we’re reacting to food.

If you take any other food sensitivity test, you are most likely taking out foods that you are fine with. It can become very restrictive when it doesn’t need to be. I don’t want people to have to deal with false negatives/false positives.

Of course, the cheapest way to test for food sensitivities in your body is the elimination diet and I love doing this with most of my clients at first with the most common inflammatory foods because you can get results like that. BUT, sometimes people are sensitive to foods that are healthy like broccoli or cauliflower or almonds.

It can be hard to exactly pinpoint which food it could be and it takes a lot longer because you need to rid yourself of a certain food for about 3 weeks and reintroduce and see if you get symptoms and how you feel. It’s a timely process.

BUT, I do want to say that the gut plays a big role in food sensitivity and how we react to the outside environment. If you find yourself with a lot of allergies or food sensitivities, you need to work deeper into the issue of not just avoiding the problematic foods, but actually nourishing and healing your gut. Again, our gut is our place where we respond to the outside world. 70% of our immune system lies in our gut.

I highly recommend the MRT food sensitivity test.

She also has an MA in Teaching and worked for more than 12 years as an elementary school teacher. She now combines her talents and enjoys educating and encouraging others to optimize their health through her writings.

She believes that self-care is the deepest form of love, as we can't fully care for others when we put ourselves last.  Good nutrition, moderate exercise, and great sleep are the keys to physical health.  Just as importantly, gratitude, prayer and spiritual practice, and friendships do wonders for overall wellness.

Hunting

I loved interviewing AJ Neste about this topic on hunting! I've always talked about how important it is to get GOOD quality animal products. Most of the meats you'll find in the store are factory farmed mass produced and super unhealthy.  If you don't know a local farmer, hunting is a way you can take control of getting good quality wild animals.

Most of all, I love AJ's view on hunting and his compassion and gratefulness for each animal that feeds and nourishes his family. This is what we're covering in the podcast today:

  • How he got into hunting
  • The process of hunting and feeding his family
  • How you can tell if an animal is healthy
  • The emotional connection with the animal that is hunted
  • Benefits of getting outside and in nature

About AJ Neste

A.J. Neste has spent the past 15 years traveling the world shooting for numerous surf publications, documenting notable personalities, musicians and athletes.  His positive energy toward life give’s his subjects the opportunity to be themselves and produce images that everyone can relate to.

His passion for documenting life hasn’t stopped as A.J.'s focus has turned his lens towards his efforts to ethically harvest wild game.

9 years ago A.J. and his wife Megan decided they would become vegetarian to take a stand for animal welfare. As the cravings for animal protein in their diet began to take affect, A.J. decided to go hunting to know exactly where his family’s food came from. Leading him to start “Huntatarian”, a lifestyle company that is focused on respecting nature and motivating others to get outdoors.

  • What myofunctional orthodontics is
  • Who can use this type of program
